Charminar is the most sought after destination in Hyderabad.
But most people visting charminar wont even notice the clock on the charminar, which has a long history.
When charminar was build the clocks were purchased from france by the nizams. In those days this was the only source of time for the people of old city, hyderabad.
During 1886, when the french were leaving India they gave 4 clocks to the East India company. These were fitted on the charminar on all the four directions of the charminar (ie., North, East, West, South). Still now for every 30 mins & 1hr the clock's bell sound can be heard. In those days the clock's bell sound was heard for nearly 5 kms it seems.
It is said that 150 yrs back the clocks on the charminar had stopped working. A person called Wahid Khan repaired these clocks and from then he took the responsibility of the maintenance of these clocks.
Wahid khan had a watch repair shop near laad bazar in old city, Still now this shop is there taken care by wahid khan's grand son.
After Wahid Khan, his son Rasool khan took the incharge of these clock.
Now its Sikindhar khan, the grand son of Wahid Khan is taking care of them.
As he is old now he has employeed Dasaradhaa chary for the same.
Currently Madhusudhana chary (Son of Dasaradhaa chary) is maintaining the clock of the charminar for the past 25 yrs.
